DFU mode

What is DFU mode?

If you want to get into jailbreaking (or already have), one of the things you’ll want to know how to do is to put your device into DFU mode.  DFU stands for Device Firmware Upgrade and you’ll be sure to see this term again and again in the jailbreaking community.
DFU mode is a state that allows you to put your iPhone to interface with iTunes, but does not load iOS operating system or boot loader. That’s the main difference between DFU mode and recovery mode.

What is DFU mode used for?

DFU mode can be used for multiple things including upgrading firmware, downgrading firmware, and even rebooting your tethered jailbroken device. So, here’s a step by step tutorial on how to do it.

How to enter DFU mode:

  • Plug your device into your computer
  • Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off
  • Hold the power button for 3 seconds
  • Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.
That’s it, you’re in DFU mode.  If you get stuck in DFU mode and need to get out, just hold the power button and home button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. This process works for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad so no matter what iOS device you’re using you can use this tutorial.
How to exit DFU mode:
If you want to exit DFU mode, hold down the Sleep/Wake or Power button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Tips to secure your Jailbreak

How to change Jailbroken iPhone or iPad’s root password

If you’re new to jailbreaking, and have just jailbroken your iOS device using the Pangu jailbreak then it may be a good idea to change the default root password to prevent someone with malicious intent from gaining access to your device.

This is especially important if you’ve installed OpenSSH.

You can follow these simple steps to change the root password on your jailbroken iOS device:

Install Mobile Terminal
  • Launch Cydia
  • Tap on the Search tab
  • Search for MobileTerminal
  • Tap on MobileTerminal from the search results
  • Tap on Install, followed by Confirm to install MobileTerminal on your device.

Change root password

By default password assigned by Apple is alpine.
  • Launch the MobileTerminal app
  • Type su root at the prompt and tap the return key

Mobile Terminal - Password Change

  • Enter alpine and hit the return key.
  • Then type passwd and hit the return key to change the password.
  • You will be prompted to enter the new password twice. Enter it twice when prompted. (Note that your keypresses will not be displayed on the terminal screen for security reasons)

Change mobile password

You should also change the password of the mobile user, which is the regular user account on your device.
  • Enter passwd mobile and hit the return key.
  • You will be prompted to enter the new password twice. Enter it twice when prompted.
That’s it. You can close the MobileTerminal app.

TOP 15 reasons to jailbreak

#1. Themes

Jailbreaking will allow you customize your iOS device in every way possible. You can install themes to change the look and feel of your iPhone or you can use Winterboard that allows you totransform your iPhone into an Android phone or transform your iPad into a Mac. Jailbreak tweaks also let you add a 5-icon dock, additional row of keys to iOS’ virtual keyboard, change the carrier logo and lots more.

#2. Customizations

In addition to theming, tweaks like Springtomize 3 allow you to customize every aspect of the iOS such as increase the number of apps in the dock to 10, give the dock a cool coverflow effect, change the duration of the system-wide animations, remove the page limits, customize the default animations, the lock screen, hide icons of stock apps, resize icons and lots more.

#3. Messages on Steroids

Apple revamped the Messages app and added some cool features like audio messages, self-destructing attachments and interactive notifications in iOS 8.
However, jailbreak tweaks like MessageCustomiser allow you to completely change the look and feel of the Messages app. It’s a pity that biteSMS hasn’t been updated for iOS 8 and most likely won’t be updated for iOS 9, but tweaks like Columba have attempted to bring some biteSMS features like Quick Compose, message forwarding and scheduling and message templates make the Messages app even better.

#4. Enhanced Lock Screen

Tweaks like IntelliScreenX add a ton of useful information to the Notification Center and Lock Screen. The tweak adds Mail, RSS, Facebook and Twitter to the Notification Center, extends the Calendar view to 2 weeks, and adds a new way to quick reply and compose messages without having to go to the Messages app. It also adds a neat way to quickly access all these types of information from the Lock screen.

#5. Extend Control Center

With Control Center, we can only turn on or off 5 system toggles and have quick launch icons for 4 apps/features. CCSettings fixes this by allowing you to customize Control Center by allowing you to add extra toggles in the top row, and also extra quick launch app icons in the bottom row.

#6. For The Power User

Power users are going to love iPhone 6s’ 3D Touch feature, which allows you to peek and pop into emails and messages, switch easily to the previous app, and even turn iPhone keyboard into a trackpad.
But it does not replace Activator. It is still a must-have jailbreak tweak for power users. It allows you to invoke actions using shortcuts from anywhere in the iOS. You would be surprised by the number of shortcuts you can use such as double tap on the status bar, triple tap the Home button, double press the sleep button to trigger stock actions or launch an app or go to the Settings toggle. It offers almost limitless shortcuts to make it easier to use your iOS device.
Check our post on how you can supercharge your jailbroken iPhone or iPad with Activator.

    #7. Find My iPhone+

Apple has made Find My iPhone more fool proof by adding Activation Lock, however it still does not offer features offered by jailbreak tweaks such as iCaughtU Pro that take a photograph of the person who enters the wrong passcode using the front camera and prevent someone from turning off your device, makes it a lot more fool proof. There have been several instances it has helped catch a thief who is oblivious of such hacks.

    #8. Set Default apps

One of the major limitations of iOS is the lack of an option to set your favorite third-party app as the default app. Thankfully jailbreak tweaks like MapsOpener, allow you to set Google Maps as the default app instead of Apple’s Maps app and BrowserChooser allow you to change the default browser.

#9. Lock folder or an app with Touch ID

You can lock apps with Touch ID using apps like Asphelia, BioLockdown, BioProtect, or AppLocker.

    #10. Reduce Eye Strain

We’ve all been there – a notification arrives on your iPhone late at night, and the screen brightness nearly blinds you for the first few seconds after unlocking. F.lux aims to solve this problem by adjusting the color of your iPhone’s display to better adapt to the time of the day.
You’d be amazed to realize how relaxed your eyes feel after installing this tweak, especially if you`tend to use your iPhone just before sleeping. In addition to this, it also helps you get rid of that eerie glow on your face when using your iPhone at night.

    #11. File Manager

iOS 9 includes an app for iCloud Drive. But it is still very limited. iFile offers a complete file manager and viewer for the iPhone. It gives full access to the file system including system files. It also allows you to edit text files and property lists, which can be quite useful occasionally.

    #12. Cool Animations

Barrel adds cool animations while swiping through Home screen pages.

    #13. Change System Font

BytaFont 2 allows you change the system font on your jailbroken iPhone. It allows you to change the font in apps, Lock screen, and more.

#14. Always-on Hey Siri to Older Devices

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus finally come with always-on “Hey Siri” functionality which allows you to use Siri without connecting your device to a power source. But with a jailbroken device, you can enable the always-on “Hey Siri” feature on older devices with the UntetheredHeySiri tweak.

#15. Unlock new iOS 9 and iPhone 6s Features

We can’t wait to see how Cydia developers will use features like iPhone 6s’ 3D Touch to unlock its potential. It also remains to be seen if the jailbreak community will be able to bring iOS 9 features like Split Screen multitasking to older devices which is available only on the iPad Air 2.

How to fix common problems with Pangu Jailbreak for iOS 9 – iOS 9.0.2

    #1. Failed attempts

Pangu team has given the following suggestions if you’re not able to successful jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch after multiple attempts:

1.Please switch to the airplane mode, try again.
2.Please reboot both your IOS devices as well as your computer, and try again.
     3. Please use the restore functionality in Pangu to restore your device, and try again.

As we’ve mentioned in our step-by-step guide, you should also disable passcode, Touch ID and Find my iPhone before using Pangu to jailbreak your device.

    #2. Getting Stuck at 45%

If you’re getting the following error: “Error at 45% – Error occurred in preparing the environment, error code (0A)” while trying to jailbreak your device then it is probably because you take encrypted backups of your device using iTunes.
To avoid the error, disable Encrypted iPhone/iPad/iPod touch Backup in iTunes via the Summary tab by unchecking the check box, and take an unencrypted backup of your device. Try to jailbreak your device using Pangu Jailbreak again to see if you can successfully jailbreak it. This solution has resolved the issue for some user. Thanks si709 for the tip!

    #3. Problems with OTA Updates

If you’re getting some other problem, and you had upgraded to iOS 9 – iOS 9.0.2 via OTA then restore your device by installing iOS 9.0.2, and try again. OTA updates are known to cause issues with jailbreak tools like Pangu jailbreak.

#4. Can’t find Settings for Jailbreak Tweaks

PreferenceLoader hasn’t been updated to support iOS 9, so you won’t see the Settings for your jailbreak apps and tweaks. Preference Loader is a jailbreak utility that lets any apps or tweaks to have their own section in the Settings app. We expect it to be updated shortly. We’ll let you know as soon as the PreferenceLoader for iOS 9 is released.

    #5. /usr/libexc/cydia/cydo error(2) error

The only way to fix the issue is to restore your device and rejailbreak it.

#5. Cydia App not showing up

If you can’t find the Cydia app after jailbreaking your device using Pangu jailbreak then open the Photos app, then run the Pangu app again, and just wait.

#6. Start button in Pangu greyed out

If you’re stuck at “Please connect your device and press Start” and the Start button is greyed out, then install iTunes on your Windows machine, and connect your device at least once, and try again.

#7. Cydia not opening or crashing

If Cydia is not opening or crashing after you’ve installed a few tweaks then it is probably because of a bad tweak. You can use the Volume UP trick to disable Cydia Substrate based tweaks to fix the issue.
If you’re not able to open Cydia or it crashes when you try to open it for the first time after successfully jailbreaking your device, then may need to restore your device to factory settings, and follow the instructions provided in this article to avoid the issue.
    • Cydia not opening or crashing after using Pangu iOS 9 – iOS 9.0.2 Jailbreak? Try this fix
Some users have reported that they’re not able to launch Cydia after successfully jailbreaking their iOS device using Pangu Jailbreak. Cydia doesn’t open or crashes immediately, making it impossible to install jailbreak tweaks.
If you’ve faced this issue, then follow the steps mentioned below to avoid the issue:
Note: Please note that you need to first reset your device to factory settings, and restore it from iTunes backup with this method, so the process could take some time.
    • If you take an encrypted backup of your device, then disable it, and take a full unencrypted back of your device using iTunes.
    • Put your iOS device in DFU mode.
    • Plug your device into your computer.
    • Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping the slide to power off.
    • Hold the power button for 3 seconds.

    • Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.
      • iTunes will inform you that the device is recovery mode. Click on the Restore iPhone… button to restore your device to iOS 9.0.2.
      • During the setup process, set it up as a new iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Don’t restore your device from a backup at this point.
      • Download the latest version of Pangu.
      • This is an important step. Before launching Cydia, turn off the AirPlane mode, and make sure your iOS device is connected to the Internet.
      • Launch Cydia, and let it load completely. Do not hit the Home button. After Cydia finishes its activities, your device will restart again.
      • You can now connect your device to iTunes, and restore your data from the backup.
That’s it. You should be able to use Cydia without any crashing issues.

Cydia crashing issue after installing a tweak

Some of our readers have pointed out that they’ve faced a problem with Cydia after installing a tweak. If you’re not able to open Cydia after installing the tweak then try the Volume Up trick. Here are the instructions:
      • Press and hold the Power button, till you see the “slide to power off” slider.
      • Swipe on the slide to turn it off.
      • Now press and hold the Volume up button on the left-hand side.
      • Then press the Power button to turn it on.
This process disables all the Substrate-based tweaks including the problematic tweak, and should allow you to open Cydia. You can now remove the tweak/tweaks you had recently installed to avoid hitting the issue again. After you’ve removed the tweak, don’t forget to reboot your device again, so that you can use the jailbreak tweaks.

#8. Avoid Boot Loop of Death issue

Some users who had jailbroken their device running iOS 9 – iOS 9.0.2 with the Pangu jailbreak were facing a mysterious “Boot Loop of Death” aka BLoD issue. You can follow our step-by-step guide to avoid or fix the BLoD issue.
    • How to avoid Pangu iOS 9 Jailbreak’s Boot Loop of Death (BLoD) issue
Note: Please note that you need to first reset your device to factory settings, and restore it from iTunes backup with this method, so the process could take some time.
    • If you take an encrypted backup of your device, then disable it, and take a full unencrypted back up of your device using iTunes. Some users have reported problems when they do a full restore via iCloud after jailbreaking, so it is advisable to do an iTunes backup.
    • Put your iOS device in DFU mode.
      • Plug your device into your computer.
      • Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping the slide to power off.
      • Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
      • Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds
      • Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.
Go to Cydia and install the latest version of Cydia Substrate.
    • Now turn it off by pressing the Power button, and swiping on the “slide to power off” slider. Turn it back on.
    • Now reboot the device with the Power and Home button. If it works then you’re good.
    • You can now restore your data from the iTunes backup.

    #9. Getting stuck at 90%

If you are getting stuck at 90% during the jailbreak process, then try to jailbreak again using Pangu jailbreak, but this time when you’re prompted to open the Pangu app, open the Photos app instead, and then open the Pangu app. Don’t close the Photos app.
